MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University History Professor Lee L. Brice has been chosen as the 2018 Gertrude Smith Professor by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (ASCSA), Greece.

The prestigious selection means Brice will spend Summer 2018 helping direct the summer program at the American School of Classical Studies and co-lead a summer field seminar.

"I will be co-directing 'Warfare and Culture in Ancient Greece,' which will run from June 11-June 29, 2018," Brice said. "This seminar gives me a chance to take my specialization in ancient military history and my enjoyment of teaching into the field and give students on-site experience examining topics related to warfare and culture. The program is fast-paced, physically demanding (hiking) and will involve extended travel around Greece, all of which keeps everything exciting as each day holds new sites and experiences."

Brice is co-directing the summer seminar with Illinois State University Associate Professor Georgia Tsouvala. The seminar is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students and to high school and college instructors of classics and related subjects.

The American School of Classical Studies in Athens is the oldest American foreign research center, having been officially founded in Athens in 1881.

Earlier this year, Brice was awarded the Elizabeth A. Whitehead Visiting Professorship at the American School of Classical Studies. The fellowship, separate from the most recent honor, pays for Brice's travel, room and board and research facilities in Greece. This research project studies the silver coinage of Corinth from the fourth to the second century BCE.

At Western, Brice teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in History, including those on Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. He has been awarded numerous grants and fellowships to further his research and the research of his students.
