Fregni To Present on Archaeology and Metalsmithing on WIU Campus

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Anthropology and Sociology Club will host a series of archaeology events on campus this week.

Giovanna Fregni, an archaeology and expert in ancient metalsmithing will present two lecture sessions and a hands-on metalsmithing workshop from Thursday-Friday, Nov. 2-3.

The schedule includes:

• Thursday, Nov. 2 – 7-8 p.m., 109 Morgan Hall: Three short talks on metals and material culture.

• Friday, Nov. 3 – noon-12:50 p.m., 453 Morgan Hall: "Experimental Archaeology – What? How? Why?" The talk will cover aspects of experimental archaeology and how it is valuable.

• Friday, Nov. 3 – 2:30-5:30 p.m., Horn Field Campus: Design and cast your own small bronze object using Bronze Age techniques.

Fregni worked at the Birmingham Art Museum as part of a team that reassembled the fragments of the Staffordshire Hoard. She continues to experiment with replicating ancient metalworking techniques in workshops and seminars in the U.S. and Europe and presents her research at conferences around the world.
