Hironimus-Wendt to deliver "Last Lecture" Nov. 8

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences Student Council will present a "Last Lecture" by Sociology and Anthropology Professor Robert Hironimus-Wendt at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 in Morgan Hall 109.

The lecture,"The Essence of Community," will provide Hironimus-Wendt an opportunity to share reflections from his life and speak to students as if it were the last lecture he was going to deliver. Hironimus-Wendt has been teaching sociology since 1988, coming to Western in 2005. He first taught at North Carolina State University as a graduate student, then moved on to James Madison University, Millikin University and Xavier University of Louisiana.

His research interests include teaching and learning effectiveness, service learning as a form of experiential learning, the wage gap between women and men and the effects of plant closings and layoffs on displaced workers and communities.

The concept of a "Last Lecture" became nationally recognized in 2007 with Randy Pausch, who gave his "The Last Lecture" speech on Sep. 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon University.

Pausch's best-selling book by the same name was chosen as WIU's First Year Experience reading selection for 2010-11. Since Pausch's presentation, the "Last Lecture" concept has been popularized and offered on college campuses throughout the U.S.
