Sellnow to Deliver Thompson Lecture March 26

MACOMB, IL – University of Central Florida Professor of Strategic Communication Timothy L. Sellnow will deliver the 28th annual Wayne N. Thompson Scholar Lecture at 5 p.m. Monday, March 26 in Horrabin Hall 1. The lecture will be video conferenced to the WIU-Quad Cities campus in Riverfront Hall, rooms 103/104.

Sellnow, a professor in the Nicholson School of Communication, will deliver his lecture titled, "We Need Help! Meeting the Emergency Communication Needs of Diverse Publics During Crises." His research focuses on bioterrorism, pre-crisis planning and strategic communication for risk management and mitigation in organizational and health settings.

During his academic career, Sellnow has conducted research for the United States (U.S.) Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Geological Survey and the World Health Organization. He has also served in an advisory role for the National Academy of Sciences and the Food and Drug Administration.

Sellnow has published numerous refereed journal articles and co-authored five books on risk and crisis communication. His recent book, "Narratives of Crisis: Stories of Ruin and Renewal" is co-authored with Matthew Seeger, a professor of communication and dean at Wayne State University.

Additionally, Sellnow received the National Communication Association's Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Research in 2015.

The Wayne N. Thompson Lecture is named to honor WIU alumnus Wayne Thompson, who was a former professor of speech communication. An endowment in his name helps sponsor a number of department programs to enhance learning and scholarship in the field of communication, including this lecture by a prominent scholar in the field.
