MACOMB, IL -- Incoming new freshmen (Fall 2019) with a high school GPA of 3.0+ and an ACT/SAT score of at least 20-24 (1030-1190) are automatically qualified for the Western Illinois University Commitment Scholarship, which provides scholarship funding of at least $3,000 per year ($12,000 total), and those with higher scores will qualify for even greater award amounts.

WIU's Commitment scholarships reward students for their academic achievement in high school and their potential to succeed in college and beyond. Western Commitment awards are renewable up to eight semesters and up to total direct costs. Seniors this year must apply for admission to the University prior to May 15, 2019 for consideration.

According to Jason Woods, interim director of Undergraduate Admissions, award amounts are based on the student's highest SAT total or ACT composite score submitted prior to enrollment in the student's first term at WIU. Students may move up in scholarship levels if they improve their test scores prior to enrollment, or earn a 3.0/4.0 GPA or higher at time of high school graduation.

"These are automatic, four-year scholarships. No separate application is necessary. Qualified students apply, accept and enroll. That's it. And you're still eligible for other scholarships, as well as federal grants, state grants, federal loans and tuition waivers," Woods added.

In addition to the Western Commitment and numerous other scholarship opportunities, Western's Cost Guarantee program ensures that the college years are a good investment with the guaranteed four-year rate freeze for tuition, fees, campus housing and meal plan. All new undergraduate students - including transfer students - are automatically included in the plan, and will not see an increase in their direct cost rates over a four-year period. Western was the first university in Illinois to offer this guarantee, and is the only public university in the state to include fees, campus housing and meal plan in that guarantee.
