MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University senior political science major Margarita Sotelo, of Cicero, IL, and a member of the University's Centennial Honors College has been awarded a prestigious internship by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.

The award allows promising Latino undergraduate students to experience working in a Congressional office, while participating in professional, leadership and civic engagement development programs.

"Being selected for this highly competitive internship is an outstanding achievement, and is a culmination of Margarita's many accomplishments inside and outside the classroom during her time at Western," Keith Boeckelman, chair of the WIU Department of Political Science.

Julia Albarracin, WIU professor of political science, and Sotelo's current supervisor in a research grant, said she knew the opportunity was perfect for her when it was brought to her attention by former WIU Professor Janna Deitz.

Stoelo said she is honored to have been accepted into the spring internship program.

"I look forward to working in a Congressional office and further enhance my professional and interpersonal skills," she said. "Although I am sad I'm leaving campus, I am ecstatic for this opportunity and the doors it will open for me in my career field. I will be back to graduate in May with my sisters and friends, with this experience under my belt."
