WIU Graduate Student Presenting Research at National Conference

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University Department of Sociology and Anthropology graduate student Saber Khani, of Iran, will present his research in middle eastern politics, social movements and social and economic development April 17-20 at the Midwest Sociological Society meeting in Chicago.

Khani's current research centers on the analysis of the relationship between government size and democratic practices in Iran. Under the direction of his thesis committee, which includes Professor Tawnya Adkins Covert (Sociology) and Associate Professor Davison Bideshi (Sociology).

He will present two roundtable papers at the upcoming conference. One paper, "The Impacts of Market on Modern Social Structure," attends to the relationship between social order and market systems and is an application of ideas from economic sociology.

In the second paper, "Democracy and Government Size in Post-Revolutionary Iran," Khani draws directly from his current research and provides a set of considerations for the understanding of democratizing processes in an international context.

"Mr. Khani's current success represents only a portion of the excellent work currently being pursued by the graduate students in the WIU Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and an even smaller fraction of the notable work accomplished by students and graduates of the department throughout the history of the graduate program in sociology," said WIU Department of Sociology Graduate Program Director Patrick McGinty. "In celebrating Mr. Khani's success, we continue to salute the success of all those who have contributed to the vital academic life of this program and department over the years and we look forward to even more opportunities to share our ongoing success in the future."

Khani will receive his master's degree in sociology in May 2019. He then plans to pursue a doctoral degree in sociology at Boston College.
