WIU Alumnus Opens Local Physical Therapy Practice

MACOMB -- AGE Rehab and Medical Fitness, located at 1701 W. Jackson St. in Macomb, is now open with the assistance of the Small Business Development Center at Western Illinois University.

Originally from Kenya, physical therapist and WIU alumnus Victor Lidaywa used his mother's initials (Adisa Gladys Erude) to honor her, as well as his heritage. Lidaywa, who received his degree in biology from WIU in 2005, worked for nearly 10 years in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at McDonough District Hospital, before deciding it was time to launch his own practice. The public is invited to attend the office's grand opening event at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3.

Lidaywa hopes to establish a practice with "patients referring to their primary care physician as family."

"That's the kind of personalized, life-long care I provide," he said. "People can't always take off work to get the services they need. We'll be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday."

The fitness center is also open to the public, offering customized training programs.

The practice provides a full range of physical therapy and rehabilitation services, as well as nutritional counseling and diabetes management. Stroke rehabilitation is among Lidaywa's areas of expertise.

"I've worked with many stroke patients over the years, some as young as 30," Lidaywa said. "It makes me very happy when I see them around town, fully recovered. My hope is that people will use our fitness center well after they're done with their prescribed rehab program to help keep active in the long run."

Lidaywa has lived in Macomb with his wife, Lora, and their three children since 1996.

"I am happy to claim Macomb as my home," Lidaywa said. "Coming from Kenya, I deeply appreciate how the people of Macomb have blessed me. This practice is my way of giving back."

Also a licensed U.S. Soccer Federation coach, Lidaywa founded the Macomb Soccer Academy in 2014. Each year he and his brother, Sylvester, a counselor with the Illinois Department of Corrections and also a WIU alum, offer an introduction to the game and soccer skill-building clinics to approximately 60 children, ages 5-12.
