MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Beginning in the Fall 2019 semester, the Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences will offer an online sociology degree. WIU is the first public university in the state to offer an online Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree and is one of only a few programs in the nation.

The new option for students offers the flexibility to take classes online or in combination with face-to-face classes on the Macomb or Quad Cities campuses.

"The ability to work on the degree from anywhere and anytime provides traditional and non-traditional students more flexibility and more course options in pursuing their degree," said Sociology Professor Tawnya Adkins Covert.

In addition, the offering is a value to students enrolled in institutions that have 2+2 agreements with WIU. The major allows students to move directly from earning an associate's degree into the online program to finish their bachelor's degree at WIU.

According to Sociology Chair and Professor oJohn F. Wozniak, WIU sociology faculty have been developing and teaching online for a number of years.

"The faculty's experience and expertise in online teaching has resulted in very positive feedback from WIU students taking online courses in sociology," he added.

Because the sociology faculty's online experience, the department is able to offer a wide variety of classes online, such as courses on the family, gender roles, minority peoples, crime and social problems.
