MACOMB, IL -- Should schools employ police officers? What are the latest issues surrounding special education? Are we getting away from separation of church and state? As educational administrators and school board members are increasingly embroiled in various controversies such as lawsuits, school discipline and religion in schools, they must keep up-to-date with legal issues and policies. That's where the 14th annual Western Illinois University School Law Conference can help.

On Friday, March 7 university professors, lawyers, government representatives and school officials will shed insight on issues facing schools. The conference will be held in at The MARK of the Quad Cities, Moline, IL.

Jeff Funk, an attorney and partner with Miller, Tracy, Braun, Funk and Paisley in Monticello, will serve as the keynote speaker. Funk will present "Religion in Schools" from 9-10 a.m.

The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sessions will feature such topics as the perils of giving job references, the No Child Left Behind Act, contracts and bargaining, special education, mistakes schools make, student discipline, computer and Internet safety in schools, teacher recertification, school resource officers and obtaining student criminal records. Elizabeth Lugg from Illinois State University will present "Play It Again Sam: Using the Tune of Accountability, Educational Malpractice is Revisited in Performance-Based Administrative Contracts" at the
12:15 to 1:20 p.m. luncheon.

"This conference offers insight into current policies and laws and serves as a support system for administrators, teachers and attorneys. We have all levels of expertise here and we have some cutting-edge topics," Max Pierson, WIU educational administration and supervision department chair and conference coordinator, said.
