MACOMB, IL – Associate Professor of Religious Studies Andrea Jain, of Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) will deliver the 33rd Mary Olive Woods Lecture, "Peace, Love, Yoga: The Politics of Global Spirituality," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 in the University Union Grand Ballroom.

Jain will talk about the way yoga has become part of a global industry that is affected by the same market forces and power struggles that shape the world's more well-known religious traditions.

A reception will be held after the lecture.

Jain is the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and author of "Selling Yoga: From Counterculture to Pop Culture." She received her doctoral degree in religious studies from Rice University in 2010 and her areas of research include religion under neoliberal capitalism; global yoga; South Asian religions, the intersections of gender, sexuality and religion; and theories of religion.

Her second book, "Peace, Love, Yoga: The Politics of Global Spirituality," will be released soon by the Oxford University Press.

The 33rd annual lecture is sponsored by the Mary Olive Woods Foundation and the WIU Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Mary Olive Woods Foundation also provides several thousand dollars in student scholarships each year in addition to supporting the annual lecture.
