MACOMB, IL -- Interested in the future of technology? Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) will host its fourth annual Tech Fest Friday, March 28, to explore a variety of technology updates and applications.

Sponsored by the COEHS, Western's Center for the Application of Information Technologies (CAIT) and Citizens National Bank, Tech Fest will feature keynote speaker Morrie Reece, senior education development executive for Apple Computer, Inc., along with a combination of technology exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on training. Tech Fest is open free to the public.

Reece's keynote, "Are We Preparing Students for the Year 2019?," will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Horrabin Hall 53. Reece has been with Apple for 20 years and in the 1970s worked with the White House, the U.S. Senate, the CIA and the Department of Defense. His multimedia keynote will address such questions as "what are the most important skills 21st century workers will need?" and "what should we be doing to prepare students to work in the technical world they are headed for?"

From 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., participants are invited aboard the "Tech Trek" showcase of technology-rich projects and applications throughout COEHS and the Macomb community. Faculty and students will demonstrate technologyÂ’s enhancement of teaching and learning through such topics as "Chat Room Lingo," "Interactive Online Courses" and "Exploring Handheld Computers." This yearÂ’s event will also feature two Macomb High School students showing their award-winning iMovie from the Macomb Quality of Life CommitteeÂ’s Magic Lantern Film Festival.

Area K-12 teachers are invited to attend demonstrations and to learn about professional development opportunities for teachers both on-site and online through CAIT. Teachers seeking recertification will receive Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUÂ’s) for participating in Tech Fest.

Several representatives from the Macomb community will host exhibits including McDonough District Hospital, the Macomb Fire Department, Citizens Investment Services, Infobahn Outfitters and Camera Land. Campus and community members are encouraged to visit the Interactive Multimedia Lab where training will be available for 12 software programs. The lab will be open for small groups and one-on-one training provided on a walk-in, first-come first-served basis.

All events will take place in Horrabin Hall. A reception, hosted by WIU President Al Goldfarb and Macomb Mayor Tom Carper, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be available through Sodexho’s Café Ala Carte in the Horrabin Hall gymnasium. For more information, contact the COEHS Dean’s Office at 309/298-1690 or visit www.cait.org/coehs for a complete schedule of events.
