Jahn Presented Award of Excellence

MACOMB, IL - In the vernacular associated with his life's passion, Western Illinois University biology professor Larry Jahn recently got "the big one."
Jahn was presented the Award of Excellence from the Illinois Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (AFS), which is given to individuals with significant contributions to AFS, the Illinois chapter and the science of fisheries over their careers.
"This award is most special to me because it comes from my peers and a former student nominated me," said Jahn, who is in his final semester of a 35-year Western Illinois teaching and research career in his passion of fish (ichthyology).
Rob Hilsabeck, a district fisheries biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and a bachelor's (1989) and master's (1991) degree graduate of Western, wrote in his nomination letter: "Larry's personality and optimistic attitude have been true to his philosophy in his educational career. His genuine, solid reputation and work ethic have benefited the fisheries profession and all of his former students, peers and friends."
Jahn served as the 13th president (1975-76) of the Illinois Chapter of the American Fisheries Society and as secretary/treasurer of the AFS North Central Division, comprised of 12 state and four Canadian provinces. He is a 21-year member and past chair of the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board, and he chaired the steering committee for the 1999 Midwest Fish and Wildlife meeting.
From June 2001 to June 2002, Jahn served as the Distinguished Visiting Professor in Biology at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs as part of the USAFA's ongoing program to bring eminent civilian educators to the Academy.
At Western Illinois Jahn has generated more than $1.75 million in grants and contracts, completed 46 master's of science students and coordinates the biological sciences wildlife art gallery. He also was named the 2001 outstanding teacher in the College of Arts and Sciences.
