WIU Physics Department to Host Virtual Nobel Prize Lecture

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Physics will host a public lecture based on the work of Nobel Prize Winners.

Physics Professor PK Babu will deliver the lecture Friday, March 26, titled "Development of Lithium-Ion Batteries – Technology that Revolutionized Energy Storage": 2019 Chemistry Nobel Prize, which is open to the public and will be held at 3 p.m. The virtual lecture can be accessed at bit.ly/WIUPhysicsColloquium.

The lecture series was started in 2011 by WIU Physics Chair Kishor Kapale. Last year's lecture was delivered by WIU Physics Professor Esteban Araya, and paid tribute to 2020 Nobel Prize winners Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez.

"In 2011, Dr. Araya gave the first lecture in the series on the expansion of the universe," said Kapale. "Ever since, we have had one of our faculty, based on their expertise and connection to the area, give a seminar on that year's Nobel Prize in Physics. On a couple of occasions, we even had a physics faculty give a seminar on that year's Chemistry Nobel Prize."
