Military Appreciation Activities at WIU Nov. 1-12

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University will host military appreciation activities Tuesday, Nov. 1-Saturday, Nov. 12.

A variety of events have been planned to honor veterans and service members leading up to Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11.

This year's schedule includes:

• Tuesday, Nov. 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m. – Care package preparation at the WIU Alumni House. The WIU community will help assemble packages that will be mailed to selected active-duty students and alumni. Monetary donations to offset the mailing costs can be made at app.mobilecause.com/vf/WIUPACK.

• Wednesday, Nov. 2, 8:30-9:30 p.m., University Union Capitol Room - Victoria Smith will share information about the legal considerations military service students may negotiate with the Veterans Resource Center liaisons. The event can also be joined by Zoom at wiu.zoom.us/j/91575511586.

• Monday, Nov. 7, noon-1 p.m. – What it Means to be a Leatherneck, University Union Capitol Rooms, and over Zoom. WIU's World War I and World War II veterans have contributed to the rich legacy of the University, including its symbols, traditions and commitment to inclusion. Cory Booher, Marine Corps veteran, will share present information commemorating the military achievements of Colonel Raymond "Rock" Hanson.

• Wednesday, Nov. 9, 3-6 p.m. – Battle of the Branches Bench Press Competition, Spencer Student Recreation Center. This event is open to active military and veterans only.

• Thursday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m. – All-Star Tug of War, Campus Recreation. The event is open to all students, faculty and staff. Pre-registration is required for the tournament-style bracket. Register at wiu.presence.io/form/campus-rec-veterans-week-tug-of-war-competition-1.

• Friday, Nov. 11, 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. – Flags of Love, Chandler Park. The flags are put up by volunteers at 7 a.m. and taken down at 5 p.m.

• Friday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m.-noon – Military Tribute Ceremony, Sherman Hall auditorium, third floor. The ceremony will honor veterans and service members.

• Saturday, Nov. 12 - First Responders and Military Appreciation Day at the Leatherneck football game. All veterans and military personnel with a valid military ID will receive free admission. Additional tickets can be requested from the Veterans Resource Center prior to the event.
