WIU Agriculture Students Participate in SASES Conference

MACOMB, IL – Ten Western Illinois University School of Agriculture students and two faculty recently participated in the Students of Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences Conference in Baltimore, MD.

The students were coached and advised by WIU agriculture professors Joel Gruver and Mark Bernards, and they participated in the a variety of competitions and presentations.

Senior agriculture science major Dustin Steinkamp, of Coatsburg, IL, received high overall individual honors in the Crops competition, and senior agriculture business major Alivia Lantz, of Augusta, IL, placed second in the speech contest.

Other WIU participants in the conference included:

• Soils Contest – Senior agriculture science major Avery Yung, of Alexis, IL; senior agriculture science major Dalton Engel, of Galesburg, IL; junior agriculture science major Clayton Walch, of Raymond, IL; and senior agriculture business major Sam Brissey, of Burlington, IA.

• Crops Judging Contest – senior agriculture science major Hannah Carlock, of Chandlerville, IL; Lantz; Walch; Avery Yung; freshman agriculture business major Reed Yung, of Alexis, IL; Brissey; senior agriculture science major Stephanie Reiter, of Hebron; and Steinkamp.

• Quiz Bowl – Reiter; Steinkamp; Avery Yung; and sophomore agriculture business major Tyler Barrington, of Alexis, IL.

In addition to the conference, students and their advisors/coaches also toured the Richardson Farms produce operation, and Corteva's Chesapeake Farms.
