MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University School of Computer Science Professor In Lee received a Distinguished Research Paper award from the Society for the Advancement of Information Systems (SAIS) at the 2022 MBAA Conference. The research paper, "Analyzing Descriptive Data Breach Information in the Healthcare Provider Sector," was the second Distinguished Research Award Lee received at the international conference, winning in 2021.

"In many organizations, the human aspect of cybersecurity is one of the major security concerns," said Lee.

The Distinguished Research Paper award recognizes outstanding scholarly work and achievements of work produced by leaders around the world in hopes of expanding it beyond its limits. Out of all the papers submitted for presentation at the conference each year, one paper is selected as the recipient in Information Systems/ Quantitative Methods. Each author is formally recognized at the conference and is awarded a plaque of achievement.

Lee's research focused on the digitization of protected health information (PHI) and the rapid growth of data breach incidents causing prominent issues. Addressing these issues, Lee came to the conclusion that healthcare providers need to understand the vulnerabilities of their internal security systems, identify various insider threats and develop a more appropriate data security strategy against these threats. Lee's study developed a novel approach to the analysis of descriptive data breach information and analyzed vulnerabilities, breach incidents, impacts and responses to the breaches for two data breach types - hacking/IT incident and theft.

"While there have been studies on these trends in data breach incidents, there has been a lack of research on the analysis of descriptive information posted on the data breach reporting," said Lee.
