MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's School of Nursing has received a donation of a simulated infant warmer from Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.

A newborn radiant infant warmer, along with newborn nursing supplies, were donated to the WIU School of Nursing after the recent closure of the Carthage hospital's obstetrics department. A simulated infant warmer typically costs about $5,000.

WIU Nursing Resource Center Coordinator Danielle Knowles connected with the hospital upon hearing its obstetrical department was closing. Knowles reached out to Dina Schaller, a department head at the hospital, and asked about what was happening to the equipment after the closure.

Schaller consulted with the hospital's leadership team to solidify the donation, which is a huge benefit to the School of Nursing's OB equipment and supplies.

"This equipment fills a gap in the maternal/newborn nursing education at the school, and will help all students to simulate many more high-risk newborn scenarios to prepare them for their nursing careers," said Knowles. "The School of Nursing is extremely grateful for the partnership with this clinical agency."
