MACOMB, IL – Two graduate students in the Western Illinois University Specialist Program in School Psychology have been recognized for the achievements at the Illinois School Psychological Association (ISPA) annual convention Jan. 26.

Each fall, graduate students enrolled in the nine school psychology training programs in Illinois are eligible to apply for the Illinois Fund for Careers in School Psychology (IFCSP) 2022 Minority Scholarship Award. Only two students are awarded these scholarship funds annually, and this year both were from WIU.

One of the awards was received by first-year WIU graduate student in school psychology, Sterling Blonigen, of Macomb, and the second award winner asked not to be named.

WIU alumnus Dr. Norman C. Teeter and his wife Dr. Carmelita B. Teeter have provided ongoing financial support for school psychology students to attend the ISPA conference each year. This year, 15 graduate students attended the conference, held in Springfield, IL.

Norman Teeter came to WIU after serving in the military with an interest in psychology and specializing in substance abuse. Carmelita Teeter received her degree in medicine from Manila Central University in the Philippines. The Teeters met while working at a hospital in the field of addiction and were awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Western in May 2006.

The Illinois Fund for Careers in School Psychology (IFCSP) was founded in 1991, to further the education of school psychologists, support scientific research in the field, promote public awareness of the important role school psychologists play in schools, communities and society. The IFCSP Minority Scholarship Program awards highly qualified applicants with scholarship funding to support graduate student tuition and fees.
