MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University has been recognized by Online Master's Degrees as one of the Best Online Master's in Reading and Literacy Programs. Western is ranked 13 out of 50 colleges and universities across the country.

"The completely online graduate program has been very helpful to students," said WIU Education Professor and Program Coordinator Melissa Stinnett. "This creates an opportunity for those who are at a physical distance to complete their program in an affordable way. We currently have students from New Jersey, Colorado and Iowa."

WIU offers two Science in Education graduate programs in Reading. Both are designed to provide elementary and secondary teachers with opportunities to increase their potential competency. This program focuses on acquiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of developmental and remedial reading theory and evidence-based practices.

This program aims to prepare teachers for various professional fields, including elementary and secondary education, K-12 reading specialists and literacy coaches.

To complete the program, students must complete 33 semester hours, including 15 hours of core courses.

In addition to the curriculum and focus areas of the program, students are offered graduate assistantships to provide instructional, research and clerical support for faculty. A graduate assistant completes nine semester hours of online coursework each semester and works with faculty for 15 hours per week. In-person assistantship positions are available on both campuses.
