Sheffield Named Interim COEHS Dean at WIU

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Western Illinois University Assistant Dean of the College of Education and Human Services Eric C. Sheffield has been named the college's interim dean, effective Saturday, July 1.

Sheffield has been with WIU since 2017, serving as chair of Educational Studies and a department professor from 2017-2019; director and professor in the WIU School of Education from November 2019-March 2022; and assistant dean of COEHS from March 2022-June 2023.

"I am honored to serve as interim dean of the College of Education and Human Services at this pivotal moment in the college's history," said Sheffield. "I look forward to working with the COEHS family—students, staff, faculty and administration—to grow existing enrollments, establish new programs, retain our students, and thereby establish the stability that this moment requires."

Prior to coming to WIU, Sheffield was a professor of Reading, Foundations and Technology at Missouri State University (MSU) from August 2013-July 2017; graduate program director/advisor of Reading, Foundations and Technology at MSU from August 2015-July 2017; associate professor of Reading, Foundations and Technology at MSU from August 2008-July 2012; assistant professor of Reading, Foundations and Technology at MSU from August 2003-2007; a high school English instructor at Interlachen High School in Florida from August 1989-June 2003; an adjunct instructor in the English department of St. John's River Community College in Palatka, FL, in 1994, and from 1998-2003 and a directing teacher at Interlachen High School from 1999-2001.

"I'm delighted to announce Dr. Sheffield as the interim dean of our College of Education and Human Services," said WIU Provost Manoochehr Zoghi. "He brings a wealth of experience, and he has demonstrated program advocacy and a collaborative approach that will serve the College well under his leadership."

Sheffield received his bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL; his master's degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Florida; and his doctoral degree in Philosophy Education from the University of Florida.

He has authored and co-authored several educational books, peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and spoken at numerous conferences.
