MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - In collaboration with the University Counseling Center, the WIU Psychology Department Student Support Hotline is developing an in-person program supported by the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act of Illinois.

The program will be an effort to provide in-person peer support to students in need of additional mentoring on campus and will focus on providing a safe and private space for students to connect with trained peer support counselors who offer active listening, empathy and resources related to everyday aspects of the student experience.

"We believe in the power of collaboration and community to enhance the support we will provide to our students," WIU Psychology Professor Kristy Keefe said. "We are excited about the positive impact our program will have on the well-being of our students starting in the coming Spring 2024 semester."

The Psychology Hotline is eager to introduce two outstanding student leaders who were selected for a scholarship to develop and expand the WIU Peer Support Counseling Program. Kaitlyn Ellis and Ilayzia Walton have shown dedication, commitment and passion in supporting their fellow students, earning them the honor of being chosen for this initiative.

Kaitlyn (Kaity) Ellis is currently in her second semester at Hotline, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Clinical/Mental Health. Her interest in therapeutic modalities and desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of adults with disabilities led her to work at Mosaic, an agency dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities, for the past 11 years. Ellis is excited to be part of the Peer Support Counseling Program and hopes to gain the skills needed to create an environment that helps people get closer to their personal goals.

Ilayzia Walton is a passionate and dedicated member of the Hotline team. She took on the role of team lead in the Fall 2022 and became the co-director in the Fall 2023. She aspires to obtain her master's degree while working closely with the correctional system. Her interest in the Peer Counseling Programs is rooted in her profound desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

As key contributors to the Peer Support Counseling Program, Ellis and Walton will bring their expertise, empathy and innovative ideas to help shape and develop the program's services. They will work alongside program coordinators, fellow peer counselors and the University community to enhance the support network available to students.

The Western Peer Support Counseling Program aims to foster a culture of well-being and resilience among students. By providing a safe space for peer-to-peer connections and offering resources related to various aspects of student life, the program will become an invaluable resource for those seeking support. In their roles as student leaders, Ellis and Walton will play a crucial part in the growth and success of the Peer Support Counseling Program, ensuring that it remains a beacon of support and hope for students facing life's challenges.

"Western Illinois University congratulates Kaity and Ilayzia on their selection and looks forward to their contributions to the program. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of community and support that defines our mission," Keefe said.
