MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences will host a Signing Day for NOYCE Scholar recipients at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8 in the Dean's Office in Morgan Hall 116.

This event is to acknowledge, promote and celebrate the NOYCE award, which provides a scholarship of up to $8,000 per semester to students seeking a degree in STEM with a teaching license. WIU was awarded an NSF-funded NOYCE grant in March 2023 and the primary goal is to provide scholarships for six new scholars each year. The six scholars for the 2023-2024 school year will attend signing day and officially be awarded the scholarship at that time.

The $1.4 million grant will fund up to 24 NOYCE scholars over the next five years. Each scholar can receive up to two and a half years of scholarship to complete an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline and a secondary teaching license. Each scholar could earn up to $40,000 toward the costs of their degree at WIU.

"The WIU NOYCE grant addresses the teacher shortage in West-Central Illinois by funding scholars intent on becoming secondary STEM teachers in high-needs districts in the area," WIU Mathematics and Philosophy Professor and the PI of the grant Bob Mann said. "We are excited about the opportunities created by this grant and believe the NOYCE project and scholarships will provide a significant benefit to the scholars, to WIU and to our regional education community."
