WIU COEHS Hosts Education Summit

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) hosted a successful Education Summit on campus, where nearly 60 guests were in attendance.

The summit provided interactive sessions on areas of topical interest and ways to improve educational services in the Western Illinois region. Sessions were led by experts from WIU faculty and staff, superintendents from school districts in the Macomb area and a team from the Association of Illinois Rural and Small Schools.

The summit covered a variety of topics and departments including:


  • The Deepening Teacher Shortage: Are Alternative Pathways to Licensure Succeeding?

  • Post-Pandemic Student Trauma: Social and Mental Health Issues

  • Schooling in Forgottonia: Contemporary Rural Education Issues


The event drew notable attendees, including WIU President Guiyou Huang, WIU Interim Provost Mark Mossman, faculty members from the WIU School of Education and local education professionals. The distinguished gathering featured voices from both the academic and political spheres, with contributions from figures such as Illinois State Representatives Dan Swanson and Norine Hammond. Local superintendents and representatives from community colleges, including the presidents and vice presidents of Spoon River and Black Hawk College, added valuable insights to the discussions.
