WIU-QC to Offer Hybrid B.S. in Mathematics This Semester

MOLINE, IL - Western Illinois University-Quad Cities is set to launch a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree program this semester in a hybrid format.

The program will offer mathematics core courses for freshmen and sophomores in person; while advanced mathematics courses will be offered virtually.

Since there are several academic programs already established at the Quad Cities campus, a wide variety of general education, elective and special courses are available to complete the degree requirements without moving to the Macomb campus.

"I'm thrilled that we're formally introducing this major at the Quad Cities campus," WIU Mathematics Professor Susie Brooks said. "This degree complements the existing Business and Engineering degrees offered, and our graduates will significantly contribute to the Quad Cities metropolitan workforce with their robust critical thinking skills."

The department chair, Victoria Baramidze, echoed Brooks' excitement. "The traditional mathematics option of the major allows students to count certain engineering courses towards the mathematics degree, creating perfect conditions for double majoring."

The curriculum establishes connections with the local community, with a focus on proximity to a large population and local and regional industries. This strategic alignment positions students to create innovative educational pathways in mathematics, with a specific emphasis on Data Science and Statistics, as well as Actuarial Science. The program's overarching goal is to extend beyond individual students to actively contribute to the economic growth and development of the Quad Cities region and beyond.
