Macomb, IL – Western Illinois University Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Political Science Keith Boeckelman was recently featured in an article from WalletHub about voting demographics.

The article, "How New Hampshire Voters Resemble U.S. Demographics in 2024" by Adam McCann discusses how New Hampshire's general demographics are nearly identical when compared to the U.S. as a whole, making the state notably accurate at predicting the overall winner of party nominations.

The article section titled "Ask the Experts" features an explanation from Boeckelman.

"Media coverage tends to emphasize the importance of doing well in New Hampshire. In general candidates who do not win the New Hampshire primary or at least finish near the top, tend to get written off and cast as "losers" in media narratives." said Boeckelman. "New Hampshire is a bellwether because of its long history of showing candidate strength, for example, Eisenhower in 1952, or weakness, for example, Lyndon Johnson in 1968. As such, it predicts how a candidate is likely to do as the presidential contest unfolds."
