MACOMB, IL - - Be a HERO and donate blood! Western Illinois University's Military Science/ ROTC will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 in Horrabin Hall Gym.

The American Red Cross estimates that every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. It is crucial for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a bountiful donation.

Donors should make sure to drink an extra 16 oz. of water (or other nonalcoholic drink) before donating, eat a healthy meal, avoiding fatty foods like hamburgers, fries or ice cream, wear a shirt with sleeves that can be rolled up above the elbows, let personnel know if you have a preferred arm or particular vein that has been used successfully in the past to draw blood.

Appointments are encouraged and walk-ins are welcome. A photo ID is required to donate. Masks are optional.

To schedule an appointment, go to redcrossblood.org/give then type in ZIP code 61455 and schedule your appointment.
