Western Illinois University Appoints Tahir Khan as Interim Director of WIU Cybersecurity Center

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University is pleased to announce the appointment of Tahir Khan as the interim director of the Western Illinois University Cybersecurity Center (WIU-CC).

With an impressive background in cybersecurity and computer forensics and a proven track record in academia, Khan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this crucial role. As Interim Director, he will play a pivotal role in leading, shaping, and advancing the university's initiatives in the field of cybersecurity.

As interim director of WIU-CC, Khan will oversee the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, research projects, educational programs and student recruiting efforts aimed at addressing the evolving challenges in the cybersecurity landscape. His leadership will contribute to Western Illinois University's ongoing commitment to excellence in cybersecurity education, research and community outreach. The development of grants and re-launch of the external facing LeatherHack Cyber Challenge are among core activities slated for Spring 2024. Combined, these activities support the School's broader National Security Agency sponsored designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense.

"We are excited to welcome Dr. Tahir Khan to the Western Illinois University community as the interim director of the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence," said Professor Dennis DeVolder, director of the School of Computer Sciences. "His extensive background and passion for cybersecurity will undoubtedly strengthen our efforts to provide cutting-edge education and research in this critical field."

The WIU-CC serves as a hub for multidisciplinary collaboration, bringing together faculty, students and industry professionals to address the complex and ever-changing landscape of cybersecurity. Under Khan's leadership, the center is poised to continue its growth and impact.

"As the interim director of the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, I am committed to promoting innovation, fostering collaboration, educating students, providing opportunities for community partners to address evolving challenges within cybersecurity and safeguarding our assets against local, national and international cybersecurity threats," said Khan. "I look forward to working with the talented team at WIU to advance our understanding of cybersecurity challenges, enhance educational opportunities for students and contribute to the broader cybersecurity community."

Khan holds a doctorate degree from George Mason University, and his expertise extends to threat detection, risk management, vulnerability assessment, digital forensics and user privacy.
