MACOMB, IL - -Six Anthropology students embarked on the program's 10th study abroad trip, led by Western Illinois University Anthropology Professor Heather McIlvaine-Newsad, across Austria. Departing from Chicago O'Hare, the group landed in Vienna for a unique opportunity to explore Salzburg and Vienna.

"International education opportunities expose students to cultures and languages different from our own. As an anthropologist, I try to show students that as humans, we all face the same problems - how to feed ourselves, make a living, form families, care for our ill and dead, etc. - but we have a wide variety of ways to solve these problems," Mcllvaine-Newsad said.

Mcllvaine-Newsad emphasized the opportunity to study abroad as a catalyst for teachable moments, revealing diverse approaches to everyday problems. Students' observations of fresher, less processed food in Austria was majorly different to their American experiences. Students had to navigate public transportation independently and adapt to new environments.

Broadening the horizons for students, exposes them to experience different cultures and languages. Beyond the classroom, this experience provided students with problem-solving, adaptability and cross-cultural communication. Mcllvaine-Newsad believes that discomfort, a natural part of navigating unfamiliar territories, serves as a means for learning and growth.

"The trip to Austria was truly a life-changing experience. For me, leaning into the experience of being a little uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations is really where I found I did the most learning, growing and connecting with others. I really enjoyed experiencing Austrian customs, bonding over delicious meals and exploring the Alps. The Hills are most definitely alive!" WIU Anthropology graduate student Emma Fleming said.

"The study abroad experience in Austria not only enriched the students' academic understanding, but also provided a profound cultural exchange," Mcllvaine-Newsad said.
