MACOMB, IL– The Western Illinois University Department of Race, Religion, Gender, and Multidisciplinary Studies (RRGMS) will celebrate Black History Month and Women's History Month at an open house Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Morgan Hall 232.

"Coming to the end of Black History Month and the start of Women's History Month, our open house highlights the work faculty in our department are doing to teach these topics every month," said Betsy Perabo RRGMS interim chair.

The RRGMS has minors in Women's Studies and a minor and major in African American Studies. RRGMS also offers a minor in Religious Studies and the paired option in Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The department has a display featuring figures in Black history, including local leaders such as civil rights activist Rev. C.T. Vivian and Officer Bill Thorpe, the first African American police officer in Macomb. In March they will have a similar display for Women's History Month.

"This will be a chance for students to gather, talk to the faculty and learn more about our three minors, African American Studies, Women's Studies and Religious Studies, as well as the courses we will be offering this summer and fall," Perabo said.

All attendees will have access to coffee, tea and snacks at the event.
