MACOMB, IL - - More than 150 students, from eight local and regional high schools, participated in the 2024 Writing Festival hosted by the Western Illinois University English Department.

Local high school students attended a variety of writing workshops during the event, diving into topics put on by faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Services and Fine Arts and Communications. 11 teachers who attended are WIU alumni and graduates of the English Education program at Western. Students chose three of the 27 workshops to participate in throughout the day.

Faculty from WIU's College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine Arts and Communication, and the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration presented the workshops.

"The Writing Festival allows high school students to experience writing at Western from faculty and programs across the university," WIU English Professor Rebekah Buchanan said. They get a chance to see what it will be like to be in the college classroom. We have had students attend the Writing Festival and then choose WIU. Another thing I love about the Writing Festival is seeing alumni return with their students. It is amazing to see the wonderful things our English Education alums are doing in the classroom and to see the great work they're doing. It is one of my favorite events of the year."

Multiple WIU alumni and students from the English Education program were in attendance, teaching the students based on what they had learned in their curriculum.
