WIU Centennial Honors College To Host Pre-Med Symposium March 5

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Centennial Honors College will host keynote speaker Dr. Thomas Nielsen `78, physician and co-owner of the Vein Specialists in Bloomington, IL, at the Dr. Jill M. Brody/McDonough Eye Associates Pre-Med Symposium from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 in the University Union Brattain Lounge.

Medical schools and health programs will be in attendance for a table fair. The panelists will include current medical students and WIU alumni, as well as practicing physicians.

The schedule of events includes:


  • 4-5:45 p.m.: Medical schools table fair

  • 5:45-6 p.m.: Opening remarks and introductions

  • 6-6:20 p.m.: Keynote speaker

  • 6:20 p.m.: Distinguished panel

The panelists will include:


  • Nielsen

  • Mallika Asar `18, a fourth-year medical student at Kansas City University

  • Dr. Amy High `01, a gynecologist/certified menopause specialist at Gennev

  • Blythe Richards `21, a fourth-year medical student at University of Illinois College of Medicine

  • Dr. Olivia White, a surgeon at McDonough District Hospital

The Pre-Med Symposium was endowed in 2016 by Dr. Jill M. Brody, ophthalmologist at McDonough Eye Associates in Macomb. The annual event provides an opportunity for WIU students to learn about medical school opportunities, current medical trends and topics and hear real-life experiences from WIU alumni in medical professions.
