MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Psychology Professor Virginia Diehl has been named psychology department interim chair, according to College of Arts and Sciences Dean Tom Helm.

Diehl’s appointment follows the December 2003 retirement of James Ackil, who taught at Western for more than 30 years and served the past 18 years as psychology department chair.

“Jim Ackil leaves huge shoes to fill. I am lucky to have many patient and kind people helping me with this transition,” Diehl said.

A teacher and researcher of cognitive processes, Diehl joined the Western Illinois psychology faculty in 1988. She earned professor status in 1997. Diehl has published numerous articles in professional journals and has been given numerous presentations at regional and national conferences. She also is actively involved with departmental, college and University committees.

Diehl earned the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Award in 2000 and has received Faculty Excellence and Professional Achievement awards at Western.

She earned her bachelor’s degree (1978) in psychology at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), her master’s degree (1984) in experimental psychology at Towson State University and her doctorate (1987) in cognitive/quantitative psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park.
