MACOMB, IL - - The 24th annual Western Illinois Senior Olympics, for individuals who are at least 50 years old, will be held Friday and Saturday, April 23-24 at Western Illinois University.

Seniors will compete against others in their age category, which includes a five-year span (50-54, 55-59, etc.). Two new events - - doubles and mixed doubles tennis - - have been added to this year’s lineup.

Friday (April 23) events will include horseshoes, biking, swimming, bowling, miniature golf and men’s and women’s doubles tennis. A 6 p.m. social, including a light meal and entertainment, will be held at the YMCA Senior Center, 400 E. Calhoun St. The social, open free to participants and their spouses, is sponsored by Citizens National Bank of Macomb.

Saturday (April 24) events will include mixed doubles tennis, free throws, track and field, a putting tournament and golf.

The Senior Olympics program is structured to encourage individuals of all ages to examine and develop their personal exercise program, to provide an opportunity for older individuals to participate against their peers in regulated events and to focus attention on the importance of regular physical exercise in lifelong health, according to Dee Hinds, WIU emeritus physical education professor.

Entry forms are due by Friday, April 16. If a T-shirt is ordered, the entry deadline is Friday, April 9. For more information or an entry form, contact Hinds at 309/836-6311. Entry forms are also available at the YMCA Senior Center.
