Islam, Ethics and Social Justice Topic of April 19 Guest Lecture

MACOMB, IL - - Guest lecturer Ahmet Karamustafa, associate professor of history and director of the religious studies program at Washington University in St. Louis, will present Islam, Ethics, and Social Justice at 4 p.m. Monday, April 19 in Stipes Hall 121 on the Western Illinois University campus.
At Washington University, Karamustafa has served as an assistant professor of Islamic Thought and Turkish Literature and director of the Center for the Study of Islamic Societies and Civilizations. Since 1989 he has been the principal director of the American Research Institute Summer Fellowship Program for Turkish Instruction at Turkey-Bosphorus University. Previously, Karamustafa was a post-doctoral research specialist in the history of cartography at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.
Karamustafa has published three books and numerous articles in his area of research focus, premodern Islamic history. Topics covered in his scholarly work include cartography in traditional Islamic and South Asian societies, Dervish groups, early Sufism and Muslim literature in Turkish and Persian.
The program, the fifth in the annual series on ethics and religion, is sponsored by the Westerns Program for the Study of Ethics. Additional support is provided by the Western Illinois philosophy and religious studies department.
