MACOMB, IL – Inessa Levi (Eh-nessa Leave-ee), associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of mathematics at the University of Louisville, has been named the dean of Western Illinois University’s College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, announced Provost Joe Rallo.

Levi will replace Thomas Helm who has served as interim college dean since August 2003. She has served as the associate dean since January 2002 and as professor of mathematics since July 1986 at the University of Louisville. She is responsible for the college’s grant and research related activities; the negotiation of start-up funds, equipment and research space arrangement; and the support of graduate programs.

She increased research funding by 70 percent and doubled the amount of grant submissions. She developed a comprehensive plan involving focused development of targeted collaborative research areas, continuous funds such as faculty and graduate assistantship lines, as well as one-time expenditures for additional space, renovation, and equipment. Levi also served as the acting chair of the mathematics department at the university, and has been a faculty member at the University of Hawaii and the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1985.

“Dr. Levi’s experience will move Western’s College of Arts and Sciences forward as we begin implementing the University’s strategic plan,” Rallo said. “She brings outstanding academic credentials and strong administrative experience to Western Illinois.”

Levi has 60 publications in algebra, semi-groups and applications in a variety of professional journals. She has six publications in education and chapters in books and research reports and laboratory manuals. Levi has given more than 25 presentations at professional meetings.
