The Renaissance Writers at Western Illinois University are accepting submissions for their newsletter, The River.

Submissions should be written about the newsletter's theme, “The Time is Now: Civic Engagement.” Writers are asked to submit two copies of their work, one on paper and one on computer disk. All work submitted becomes the property of the Renaissance. All students whose work addresses the theme are invited to submit to the publication. Submissions are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 at the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center.

The purpose of the Renaissance Writers is to unite individuals whom, through short stories, satires, prose, African American essays, poetry recitals and The River newsletter, strive to promote cultural awareness by stimulating literary creativity and excellence within the black community thereby enhancing the quality of life for the Western Illinois University community as a whole.

For more information contact the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center at 309/298-2220.
