Letter to the University Community:

At its June 4, 2004, meeting, the WIU Board of Trustees accepted the strategic planning document as the direction in which the university will head over the next several years. With the board’s approval of the plan, we began preparing for the implementation phase of the planning process. It is our intent to involve as many university members and groups as practical in implementation, and it is with this aim that we seek your interest in phase II of the planning process.

Each goal of the strategic plan will have an implementation team. The purpose of the team is to review the goal and its action strategies, create structures for executing the action items, and determine timeframe, cost, and methods for evaluating success. Many of the implementation teams will need to meet for only a brief period of time while a few may require greater commitment of time from their members. Each implementation team will include membership from constituency groups closely linked to the functions outlined in the specific goal and its corresponding action strategies. Most implementation teams are also designed to include additional members of the campus community that have an interest in the goal it represents.

The following goals have open seats for an interested member of the faculty, staff or student body (as specified):

Goal: To achieve excellence in undergraduate education – 2 Open Faculty Seats
Goal: To achieve excellence in graduate education – 2 Open Graduate Faculty Seats
Goal: To respond to student concerns with a culture of responsiveness at all service points – Open Faculty Seat, Open Student Services Seat
Goal: To attract, recruit, retain and develop an excellent faculty representative of the diverse and global society – 2 Open Faculty Seats
Goal: To develop and foster a superior staff and administration that is responsive, effective and efficient in supporting the institution’s mission, values and objectives – Open Student Services Seat, Open Civil Service Seat
Goal: To assist the faculty in making a career-long commitment to high quality teaching – Open Non-Tenured Faculty Member Seat, Open Tenured Faculty Member Seat
Goal: To encourage and support research and scholarly/creative activities – Open Faculty Member Seat
Goal: To improve the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability – Open Student Seat, Open Faculty Seat
Goal: Macomb and Quad Cities Communities – To further cultivate positive relationships between our campuses and host communities – Open Macomb Student Seat, Open Quad Cities Student Seat

If you are interested in contributing to the planning process through involvement in an implementation team, please forward your interest to Kathy Cavins at KM-Cavins@wiu.edu by October 6, 2004. Implementation teams are expected to convene in early October to begin their work.

I appreciate your continued support of and involvement with the strategic planning process for the university. If you have questions or concerns regarding this portion of the process, please feel free to direct them to either Kathy or me.

For the University,
