WIU Holds Inaugural Robert Gabler Lecture November 17

MACOMB, IL - - Seth Feaster of The New York Times will present the inaugural Robert Gabler Lecture for the Western Illinois University geography department Wednesday, Nov. 17. The lecture, "Geography, Design and Journalism: A geographer at The New York Times shares his experience in making information graphics," will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Stipes Hall 121 as part of Geography Awareness Week.
Feaster has produced maps and other forms of information graphics at The New York Times for 17 years. He received his bachelors degree in geography from the University of Vermont (1986) and his masters degree in geography from Bristol University, England (1995).
The lecture will focus on how the visual presentation of information has become increasingly influential in recent years. According to Feaster, this trend is based on the emergence of sophisticated graphics software, a revival of interest in visual design and growing availability of information through the media and the Internet. Feaster will discuss how geographers are perfectly suited to be at the center of this trend.
Westerns Robert Gabler lecture series is named in honor of the former faculty member and administrator who served at WIU from 1957 to 1990. Gabler served as chairperson of Westerns geography and geology departments and director of international programs. He received three University Presidential Citations for teaching excellence and university service. He also served two terms as chairperson of the faculty senate.
He served as editor of the Bulletin of The Illinois Geographical Society, president of the Illinois Geographical Society and director of coordinators and president of the National Council for Geographic Education. Gabler was also the recipient of the NCGE George J. Miller Distinguished Service Award and was named a "Leader in American Geography" in 1992.
