MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s military science department, a U.S. Army ROTC program, recently added two prestigious awards to its long list of accomplishments.

WIUÂ’s ROTC Bulldog Battalion was named the best large program in the 10th Brigade and a top 15 percent school in all of Cadet CommandÂ’s 272 programs.

The 10th Brigade, headquartered at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, includes 22 college and university programs in Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

“This recognition is a great acknowledgement of the dedication and professionalism of our cadets and staff,” said LTC Mick Cumbie, department chair. “We commissioned 28 officers in 2004, our second highest production total in the past 10 years. In addition, our junior and senior cadets maintained a 3.24 cumulative grade point average, an accomplishment of which we are quite proud.”

Established in 1968, WesternÂ’s military science department has a longstanding tradition of excellence, having been named the recipient of the General Douglas MacArthur Award for the best ROTC battalion in the Midwest in 1994, 2001 and 2002.
