Satern Named Kinesiology Chair at Western

MACOMB, IL – Miriam Satern, kinesiology (formerly called physical education) professor at Western Illinois University, has been named chair of Western’s kinesiology department, effective April 1, according to College of Education and Human Services Dean Bonnie Smith-Skripps.

Satern, who has been a member of the WIU faculty since 1995, has served as interim chair since July 2004. She has taught such courses as biomechanics, motor development, anatomy, human movement and skill development for coaches and teachers. Prior to coming to Western, Satern was on faculty at North Dakota State University, Kansas State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Texas Wesleyan College.

“Dr. Satern’s appointment provides a seamless, supportive leadership to the department,” Smith-Skripps said. “She will ensure that the department continues its commitment to quality instruction and services to Western students.”

Satern has authored and co-authored several articles for professional publications and has presented at many professional meetings. She has served as the editor of the performance excellence column for Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sports Educators; as the chair of the Biomechanics Academy of the National Association for Sports and Physical Education within the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); as vice president-elect, president and past president for Adults of the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD); and as a reviewer for the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and other professional publications.

Satern received the 2000 Quarter Century Award from IAHPERD and is currently a member of such professional organizations as the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Midwest Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine and AAHPERD.

Satern received her bachelorÂ’s degree from Iowa State University, her masterÂ’s degree from the University of Arizona and her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
