WIU Psychology Adviser Earns National Award

MACOMB, IL - - Kathleen “Kitty” Miller, academic adviser for Western Illinois University’s psychology department, has been selected as an Outstanding Advising Award Winner in the Academic Advising – Primary Role category by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for 2005.

Miller is one of eight academic advisers nationwide to be honored in the primary role category, which includes the direct delivery of advising services to students. She will be honored and presented with the award in October at the NACADA national conference in Las Vegas.

“My level of gratitude to other WIU staff, faculty, advisers and students is difficult to express. This is a wonderful recognition at so many levels,” Miller said.

Last fall, Miller received Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s 2004 Outstanding Academic Adviser Award.

She began in 1997 as the first professional adviser in the College of Arts and Sciences and the psychology department. She advises all psychology majors and minors - - more than 450 - - and registers all new students in the major. Since Miller has been associated with the psychology department, student satisfaction in advising has jumped from 66 percent to 93 percent.

Miller earned a bachelor of science in education degree (1974) and a master of science in college student personnel (1992) from Western Illinois.
