WIU ROTC Cadets Commissioned Second Lieutenants

MACOMB, IL - - Five women and eight men in Western Illinois University Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) program were commissioned second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a May 13 ceremony in the University Union.

The ceremony included the pinning on of the second lieutenant gold bar by family and friends selected by the cadet.

This spring, Western Illinois’ ROTC Bulldog Battalion was named the best large program in the 10th Brigade and a top 15 percent school in all of Cadet Command’s 272 programs. The 10th Brigade, headquartered at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, includes 22 college and university programs in Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Established in 1968, Western’s military science department has a longstanding tradition of excellence, having been named the recipient of the General Douglas MacArthur Award for the best ROTC battalion in the Midwest in 1994, 2001 and 2002.

Below are area individuals, listed by hometown, who took the oath of office of a commissioned officer:

ALEXIS - Abby L. Wiles, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission in the Ordnance Corps. She will be assigned to Western Illinois University as a Gold Bar Recruiter and then attend Ordnance Corps Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. 2LT Wiles is the daughter of Glen and Connie Braden, who pinned on her bars along with her husband, Matt Wiles. FORSYTH – Jeffrey K. Lester, a senior recreation, park and tourism administration major, received an reserve duty commission in the Ordnance Corps. He will attend Ordnance Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD in September. 2LT Lester is the son of Roger and Joan Lester, who pinned on his bars. (Download print-quality photo)

GURNEE – Andrew R. Chojnacki, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission in the Field Artillery Corps. He will attend Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, OK. 2LT Chojnacki is the son of Ladd and Mary Chojnacki, who pinned on his bars. (Download print-quality photo)

HUNTLEY – Sarah E. Lund, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission in the Military Intelligence Corps. She will serve as cadre at the Leaders Training Course at Fort Knox, KY and proceed to Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Fort Huachuca, AZ. 2LT Lund is the daughter of Craig and Carol Lund. MAHOMET - Justin P. Strom, a senior in Western Illinois’ Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts degree program, received an active duty commission in the Ordnance Corps. He will attend his Ordnance Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. 2LT Strom is the son of Mike and Betty Strom, who pinned on his bars. (Download print-quality photo)

MOKENA - James M. Roe, a senior computer science major, received a reserve duty commission in the Finance Corps. He will attend his Finance Officer Basic Course at Fort Jackson, SC. 2LT Roe is the son of James and Nancy Roe. Pinning on his bars were his mother and his fiancée, Amy Helling. MOLINE - Ryan J. Mann, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission in Military Intelligence Corps. He will be assigned as camp cadre at Warrior Forge at Fort Lewis, WA and then attend Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course at Fort Huachuca, AZ. 2LT Mann is the son of Jeff Mann and Kris Lively, who pinned on his bars. PEKIN - James L.R. Sarff, a senior law enforcement and justice administration, received an active duty commission in the Infantry. ROCKFORD – Megan E. C. Hare, a senior psychology received an active duty commission in the Medical Service Corps. She will serve as cadre at Warrior Forge at Fort Lewis, WA and then attend Medical Service Officer Basic Course at Fort Sam Houston, TX. 2LT Hare is the daughter of Richard and Margaret Hare, who pinned on her bars. WONDERLAKE - Joseph A. Mongelluzzo, a senior computer science major, received an active duty commission in the Signal Corps. He will attend Signal Corps Officer Basic Course at Fort Gordon, GA. 2LT Mongelluzzo is the son of Joseph Mongelluzzo from Wonder Lake (IL) and Mary Mongelluzzo from Harvard (IL). She will serve as cadre at the Leaders Training Course at Fort Knox, KY and then attend Aviation Officer Basic Course at Fort Rucker, AL. 2LT Zamorano is the daughter of Guillermo and Ana Zamorano. REDFORD – Robyn M. Bourell, a senior in Western Illinois’ Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts degree program, received an active duty commission in the Ordnance Corps. She will serve as cadre at Warrior Forge at Fort Leiws, WA and then attend Ordnance Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. 2LT Bourell is the daughter of Rustina Bourell.
