MACOMB, IL - - Lauren Ashley Barnes, (Flossmoor, IL) a Western Illinois University freshman law enforcement and justice administration major, completed an internship with Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka this summer from June to Aug. 15.

Responsible for daily administrative tasks, Barnes worked in the front of the office as a receptionist and provided information on programs offered by the Treasurer’s office to visitors.

After completing an application and undergoing the interview process, Barnes was selected as one of the interns to gain work experience with the Treasurer. Since she knew it would be a great addition to her resume and would provide her with valuable experience, Barnes was enthused to be chosen.

“The experience was definitely worthwhile, and I would love to go back next summer,” said Barnes. “The office was full of wonderful, happy people. Everyone treated me like an adult, and I loved it.”

Barnes credits learning a great deal of people skills and how the real world works to her summer internship position.

Topinka celebrated the work of her interns at a recent ceremony in her Chicago office.

“I am so proud of our interns,” Topinka said. “They are a talented group of students who have really helped our office be more accessible to the people of Illinois.”
