The Trojan War in Cartoon Art Topic of September 16 Guest Lecture at WIU

MACOMB, IL - - Since the 19th century several major features of the film “Troy,” starring Brad Pitt, have been frequent themes in cartoon art in Europe and the U.S., according to Western Illinois University Assistant Professor of History Lee Brice.

To demonstrate cartoon treatments of classical mythology in modern culture, Western’s history department, with support from the Illinois Humanities Council, will present “The Trojan War in Cartoon Art” on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The 7 p.m. illustrated talk scheduled for Morgan Hall 101A will be delivered by guest speaker Tom Sienkewicz, the Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics and chair of the classics department at Monmouth (IL) College.

The talk will trace cartoon treatments of Achilles, Helen, the Trojan Hourse and Odysseus from the caricatures of French artist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) to political cartoons on the current war in Iraq.
