Hurricane Katrina Symposium September 21

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University’s department of African American Studies will hold an interdisciplinary symposium titled “Hurricane Katrina: The Environment, Poverty and Race Politics in 21st Century America” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 in the University Union Sandburg Theatre.

Panelists include faculty members Peter Cole, history assistant professor; Redina Herman, geography assistant professor; Essie Manuel Rutledge, sociology and anthropology professor; Alphonso Simpson, Jr., African American Studies assistant professor; and Pearlie Strother-Adams, English and journalism associate professor; and students Karla Fletcher (Chicago, IL), a junior communication and African American Studies double major; and John Walcher (Springfield, IL), a junior biology major. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, African American Studies associate professor and chair, will moderate the discussion.

Discussants will address the historical, environmental, racial, social, economical and political ramifications of the disaster and the response which emanated. A question and answer session will follow.
