Illinois Deans Council at Western September 29-30

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will host the annual meeting of arts and sciences deans from Illinois universities Thursday-Friday, Sept. 29-30.
Western Illinois College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean Inessa Levi and CAS faculty will present two general collegewide initiatives to their colleagues, undergraduate research and outreach.
An example of undergraduate research will be given at the 5:30 p.m. Thursday reception in the University Union Prairie Lounge. Lee Brice, a Western Illinois assistant history professor, will show a brief film and speak about the history of the trebuchet (trey boo shay), a heavy projectile throwing device used as a siege engine in medieval times, which a student in his Spring 2005 History 430G, Topics in Ancient History class replicated as a research project. The trebuchet, which history major Steve Catania constructed as part of his Honors curriculum project, will be on display on the patio. Catania received an undergraduate research grant from the College of Arts and Sciences as well as funds from the history department.
A dinner for all Illinois Deans Conference participants and guests will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Union Lincoln Room.
An 8:20-10:30 a.m. Friday session in the University Union Capitol Room will include presentations on student research by Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois faculty members. Westerns participants include Virginia Diehl, psychology department professor and chair, presenting information about undergraduate research and the Psychology Clinic; Richard Anderson, biological sciences professor and chair, presenting information about undergraduate research and Westerns Alice L. Kibbe Life Sciences Station; Charles Helm, political science professor and chair, presenting information about Westerns Survey Research Center, which he directs; Christopher Sutton, geography associate professor and chair, presenting information about geographical information services; and William Doe, professor of geography and director of Westerns Institute for Environmental Studies, presenting information about the institute.
A session will be held from 11 a.m.-noon discussing new advising challenges institutions are facing.
