High School Biology Day October 28 at Western Illinois University

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s 25th annual Biology Day for high school students will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 in Waggoner Hall on the Macomb campus.
High school students from seven regional schools will explore various aspects of the field of biology and participate in one of two academic competitions. A variety of seminars, including discussion of recent research and career issues, will be presented by Western Illinois biology faculty and students. Participants may also sit in on a freshman-level biology lecture class.
Participating schools, all from central and west-central Illinois, include: Astoria High School, Athens High School, Galva High School, Lincoln Community High School, Augusta Southeastern High School, Rock Island High School and Washington Community High School.
Competitions will include the Biology Bowl and hall competition. In the bowl competition teams of four students compete against other schools regarding their biological content knowledge. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. The hall competition includes examining various display cases in Waggoner Hall and answering questions about those displays.
Biology Day is the first of three science outreach events this fall sponsored by WesternÂ’s College of Arts and Sciences. Two upcoming events hosted by the physics department include a Pre-Engineering/Pre-Architecture Day Saturday, Nov. 12 and the annual demonstration show Thursday, Dec. 1.
