WIU Math TEAM Holds Monster Math Night at Edison Elementary School

MACOMB, IL - - Nearly 25 students from Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s Math TEAM organized a Monster Math Night at Edison Elementary School in Macomb recently.

Fourth through sixth grade students from Edison, Calvary Baptist Academy and St. Paul School, along with their families, participated in the evening which featured fun mathematics activities and games that the students played with their family members and the WIU students.

The Math TEAM is made up of elementary education majors who are interested in teaching math and making learning more enjoyable for children. The main organizers from the group were senior Rebecca Brown (Silvis, IL), chair; senior Rebecca Watters(Knoxville, IL), chair; junior Rebecca Cranston (Algonquin, IL), president; senior Amanda Goetz (Nauvoo, IL) and senior Katie Busch (Sycamore, IL).

The Edison PTO sponsored the event by purchasing food for the evening.

“This was fun and beneficial for everyone, from the elementary children and their parents to the teacher education students from Western,” said Professor Jim Olsen, the Math TEAM’s faculty adviser. “Our Math TEAM members did a great job of organizing and running this event,” he added.
