WIU Art Gallery Presents Slide Lectures; New Deal and Great Depression Projects

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Art Gallery will present a slide lecture titled “Relief and Recovery Without Strings: The New Deal in McDonough County, Illinois” by David Atkinson at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14 in the University Art Gallery.

The lecture will discuss various New Deal programs and projects that assisted and benefited the citizens and towns of McDonough County. These developments range from architectural projects, such as shelter houses at Glenwood Park and Spring Lake State Park, to tree plantings at Argyle Lake State Park, to road construction projects throughout the county.

Atkinson will also present an overview of various programs and projects that benefited the students and Western Illinois University during the Great Depression at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the University Art Gallery. Some of these developments include the Laboratory School (presently Simpkins Hall), the art and theatre departments and student assistance.

The New Deal exhibit runs through Thursday, Nov. 17.
